Volunteers are an essential part of Ardent Hospice’s philosophy of care. Many volunteers in hospice find it to be an incredible, fulfilling experience to be able to assist those in need at a critical point at the end of their lives. Volunteers simply need a caring heart and a willingness to serve.
Some of the opportunities available include:
- Patient Companion — The gift of a volunteer’s presence gives patients an awareness that they are cared for and are not alone.
- Support for family members—Volunteers can help by running errands, doing housework, or staying with the patient while the family member takes some time away from the house.
- Administrative support—Volunteers can help in the office (assembling materials, preparing letters, answering phones, copying, filing, data entry, etc.)
- Bereavement support programs—Hospice volunteers can work closely with the hospice’s bereavement coordinator.
Special note: Some volunteers are introduced to hospice through the death of a family member, and so they understand firsthand the value of hospice care. We welcome those with personal experience and also encourage them to wait a year before serving as a patient companion. Those volunteers who have suffered a recent loss are certainly welcome to complete the training now and help us in an administrative way.
Minimum age: 18 (Volunteers younger than 18 must be accompanied by a trained adult or Ardent staff.)
New Volunteer Training: To ensure that our volunteers are prepared to support our patients and their families, we require that our volunteers complete an orientation session, submit to a routine background check and two-step TB testing (done at training at no cost to the volunteer). Training involves a one-day program held at the Ardent Hospice office.
New Volunteer Orientation is offered periodically
at Ardent Hospice at 700 Parker Square in Flower Mound.
Next training date: Saturday, September 14, 2019, 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
